Can You Get a Brazilian Wax on Your Period? What to Know Before You Go

Yes, you can get a Brazilian wax on your period with a tampon or menstrual cup. Here is what to expect, how to stay comfortable, and when to reschedule.

Can you get a Brazilian wax on your period? Yes. Wear a tampon or menstrual cup and you can keep your appointment as usual. Skin may feel a bit more sensitive, so the week after your period is often more comfortable.

Your period showed up the week of your Brazilian appointment. Do you cancel, or do you go? This is one of the most common questions we get, and the short answer is that you can absolutely keep your appointment. Here is what to know so you feel comfortable and confident.

Yes, you can get a Brazilian wax on your period

Waxing during your period is safe and completely normal. Estheticians wax clients on their periods every week, and it's nothing we haven't seen before. The one thing we ask is that you wear a tampon or a menstrual cup to your appointment. That keeps the area clean and lets your waxer work on the whole area, including the labia and between the cheeks.

Pads, period underwear and menstrual discs don't work for a Brazilian, because the wax needs access to the skin around them. If a tampon or cup isn't an option for you, that's okay. Just reschedule for a few days later.

Why waxing can feel more sensitive around your period

Many people notice their skin feels more sensitive in the few days before their period starts and during the first days of bleeding. Hormone shifts can lower your pain tolerance and make skin a little more reactive. That doesn't mean the wax will go badly. It just means it might sting a bit more than usual.

If you have flexibility, the week after your period is often the most comfortable time to wax. If you don't, a few small steps make a big difference.

How to make it more comfortable

  • Put in a fresh tampon or empty your cup right before your appointment.
  • Skip caffeine and alcohol for a few hours beforehand. Both can make skin more sensitive.
  • Take your usual over-the-counter pain reliever about 30 to 45 minutes before, if it's something you already take and it's safe for you.
  • Breathe out on each pull. It sounds simple, but it helps.
  • Wear loose, comfortable clothing and bring a fresh pair of cotton underwear if that makes you feel better.

We use an all-natural hard wax that shrink-wraps around the hair instead of sticking to the skin, which is gentler on sensitive areas. Learn more in our guide to hard wax for Brazilian waxing.

Hygiene: what to expect in the room

It's normal to feel a little self-conscious, but please don't. Our Licensed Estheticians wear gloves, use a fresh applicator every time with no double-dipping, and cleanse the area before starting. A tampon string is simply tucked out of the way while we work.

Before you come in, a quick rinse or a gentle, unscented wipe is all you need. There's no need to apologize or explain. Periods are part of life, and our job is to make your appointment easy.

When it's fine to reschedule

Keeping your appointment is always an option, and so is moving it. Consider rescheduling if:

  • You're having heavy cramps or just don't feel up to it.
  • You can't or prefer not to use a tampon or cup.
  • It's your first Brazilian and you'd like it to be as comfortable as possible.

There's no wrong choice. Just give us a call at (860) 374-1193 or update your booking online. A few days won't throw off your hair growth cycle.

Aftercare during your period

The usual Brazilian wax aftercare applies, with a couple of extra notes:

  • Change tampons or empty your cup regularly to keep the area clean and dry.
  • Choose breathable cotton underwear. If you use pads after your appointment, change them often, since heat and moisture against freshly waxed skin can lead to irritation.
  • Skip hot tubs, saunas and pools for 24 to 48 hours, as you would after any wax.
  • Start gentle exfoliation around day three to help prevent ingrown hairs.

Questions

Frequently asked

Can you get a Brazilian wax on your period?

Yes. Wear a tampon or menstrual cup and you can keep your appointment as usual. Skin may feel a bit more sensitive, so the week after your period is often more comfortable.

Can I wear a pad or period underwear to a Brazilian wax?

No. The wax needs access to the skin, so a tampon or menstrual cup is required. If neither works for you, reschedule for a few days later.

Is waxing more painful on your period?

It can be. Many people feel more sensitive in the days just before and during their period, but the difference is usually small.

Do I need to tell my esthetician I'm on my period?

You don't have to, but a quick heads-up is welcome. It's completely normal and nothing to be embarrassed about.
